Audiologist examining a patient’s ear during wax removal

Ear Wax (Cerumen) Removal

Never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear. There is a reason this phrase gets repeated. Most ear canals are self-cleaning, and wax is normal and protective. Cotton swabs, ear candles, and at-home irrigation kits tend to push wax deeper rather than remove it and can damage the delicate structures of the ear canal. That said, some ears do accumulate wax in ways that block sound, cause discomfort, or interfere with hearing aid performance. When that happens, professional removal by an audiologist is the right answer: quick, comfortable, and performed with the right tools for the job,  including gentle irrigation systems designed for safe wax removal.

Signs you may have wax buildup

Symptoms of ear wax buildup include muffled or reduced hearing, a feeling of fullness in the ear, itching, ringing, or earache. These can also be caused by other conditions, which is why professional evaluation is preferable to self-treatment.  If you are a hearing aid wearer experiencing feedback or reduced device performance, wax in the canal is a common contributing factor. If removal reveals a change in underlying hearing, we may recommend a Hearing Evaluation to establish a current baseline.
